Terri throws a hooley for Tuesday's Child

VENUE    The Black Box

DATE    Wednesday 4th March 2009

TIME    8pm

Terri Hooley, founder of Good Vibrations records and career-maker of many young bands in Northern Ireland, including The Undertones, is organising a benefit gig for the Belfast – based charity Tuesday’s Child.

Gig for Gaza Belfast

Terri is bringing together some of Northern Ireland’s finest singer-songwriters to support Tuesday’s Child in their work with children in Gaza.

Henry McCullough, Errol Walsh, Bap Kennedy, Cara Robinson & Jackie Rainey, Gerry Creen and friends will perform in The Black Box on Wednesday 4th March. The musicians, who are donating their time and talents for free, will be singing their hearts out on behalf of suffering children in the Gaza strip.

Terri Hooley said “I first heard of the work of this great charity through the release of Tuesday’s Child – The Album. The work they have been doing in Gaza is fantastic. When you see the terrible atrocities inflicted on the children of Gaza you feel helpless. Recent events have proven that a lot more has to be done. Now, with the help of other like-minded people, we hope that this concert will raise, not only money, but people’s awareness of this terrible and needless tragedy”.

Jackie and Cara said ''Music is one of the strongest international communicators and to be part of Terri Hooley’s event for the Tuesday's Child charity and to bring as much awareness to this horrific situation in Gaza is an honour. These innocent children have lost everything due to a war. We need to dig deep and remember what makes us human''.

Gerry Creen, who wrote and performed the song Tuesday’s Child on the charity’s double album said: “I am glad to be able to do something to alleviate the terrible suffering that has been inflicted on Gaza and, at the same time, to highlight the grave injustice that has been suffered by so many children and innocent people”.

Tuesday’s Child has been feeding starving children in Gaza since November 2007 and supports three primary schools in the strip. Tuesday’s Child was the first charity in Ireland, North or South, to respond to the plight of the people caught in this most violent of wars. The charity, inspired by a Marian pilgrimage to Medugorje in May 2006, promotes justice for every child and donates 100 percent of proceeds. The charity has adopted the UN Charter of Children’s Human Rights (UNCRC) but recognises that the declaration has failed the children of Gaza for years.

Tuesday’s Child founder Orla Sheehan, still elated after two sell-out benefit concerts in Dublin’s Vicar St, said “We are delighted to learn that Terri and his friends are organising a concert in our home town for Tuesday’s Child. There is huge need in Gaza presently. Our goal is to lend a helping hand to as many children as possible in picking up their lives after this terrible trauma. While the war is over, the injustices these forgotten children face continue, with many children being refused transfer out of Gaza for urgent medical treatment. We hope the Black Box gig will not only raise much needed monies but highlight the ongoing violations of human rights these suffering children are still being subjected to”.

Tickets for the event cost £10 and are available from The Black Box and Good Vibes Record Shop Winetavern Street. All proceeds will go towards the Tuesday’s Child emergency relief fund for food, water, milk, medicines, mattresses and blankets.

One Country Country Spotlight: Democratic Republic of Congo... The recent civil war in eastern DRC has devastated many aspects of life and children are among those most affected. A population size equivalent to that of Ireland, north and south, died either through direct conflict or displacement. Mulongo is a school catering for about 2000 children. The school is one of many decimated during the war. It needs rebuilt and basic school supplies and a playground facility with better salaries to retain underpaid teachers. The Active Christian Evangelism (ACE) Group, lead by Dr Graham Fry, is funding the project; more funds are needed. Other areas in needs are feeding programmes, health promotion programmes and support of a new maternity hospital. Find out more about the Countries we help...
