Press Office at Tuesday’s Child

Hallelujah

DATE    Tuesday 10th February 2009

Tuesday’s Child’s star-studded music gigs for children in Gaza, at Vicar St, sold out both nights to rapturous applause and standing ovations.

Audiences were treated to a feast of music by some of Ireland’s music greats: Neil Hannon, Lisa Hannigan, The Waterboys, Jack L, Mary Black, Liam O’Maonlai, Mundy, Eleanor McEvoy, Paul Brady, Kila and One Day International. Evenings were hosted by Colin Murphy, Barry Murphy and Eric Lawlor.

Snow Patrol, The Beach Boys, Cat Stevens, Jimmy MacCarthy, Duke Special and The Chieftans were among the music contributions to the auction. Other items included a Thin Lizzy tour jacket from the Live and Dangerous Tour of 1978, and a 1968 Manchester United European Cup Final Programme. Irish Olympians Ronnie Delaney and Ken Egan also featured as did celebrity chefs Rachel Allen and Richard Corrigan, Irish artist Mark Redding, award-winning poet Paul Muldoon, celebrity hairdresser Gary Kavanagh and Irish designer Helen McAlinden. A trip for two to Medugorje, kindly donated by Marian pilgrimages, was in keeping with the ethos of and inspiration for the charity.

At the end of the two night concert, all artists came on stage in a finale to join Jack L in his fabulous interpretation of Hallelujah! Alleluia indeed for everyone who contributed their time and talents for free.

Speaking at the finale, Tuesday’s Child founder, Orla Sheehan, said “The two gigs have been just incredible. We are overwhelmed by the generosity and compassion of all of the artists and musicians involved. I am so proud of everyone involved. Thanks also to the backstage team, sound, video and photography and everyone who contributed to the auctions and raffles over both nights. Special thanks also Richard O’Connell of Roc Design and to Aiken Promotions for making it all possible”.

All proceeds from the two nights at Vicar St. will go towards helping children in Gaza. “While the war is over for now, the tragedy is that, even with the world media focusing on the 40 km strip, the human rights of children in Gaza continue to be violated daily, with transfers, out of Gaza, for children needing life-saving medical treatment being refused”, said Ms Sheehan, “Tuesday’s Child hopes that, as well as raising much needed funds, these benefit concerts will maintain awareness of the terrible plight of these children”.

Ends.

One Country Country Spotlight: Democratic Republic of Congo... The recent civil war in eastern DRC has devastated many aspects of life and children are among those most affected. A population size equivalent to that of Ireland, north and south, died either through direct conflict or displacement. Mulongo is a school catering for about 2000 children. The school is one of many decimated during the war. It needs rebuilt and basic school supplies and a playground facility with better salaries to retain underpaid teachers. The Active Christian Evangelism (ACE) Group, lead by Dr Graham Fry, is funding the project; more funds are needed. Other areas in needs are feeding programmes, health promotion programmes and support of a new maternity hospital. Find out more about the Countries we help...
