Press Office at Tuesday’s Child

From Glengormley to Gaza…
Artists bring excitement to Belfast City Centre

DATE        Tuesday 14th December 2010

EVENT      Tuesday’s Child Christmas Art Exhibition

VENUE     Old Northern Bank Building,2 Waring St, Belfast

TIME        7.30 – 9 .00 pm

Over 160 artists from all over Ireland are exhibiting their works in a Christmas Art Exhibition alongside paintings by children from strife-torn Gaza in a unique show by leading children’s charity “Tuesdays Child”.

“The response to our appeal from the artistic community has been amazing,” said Orla Sheehan, Chairperson of Tuesday’s Child, “Our objective is to raise funds to buy three gifts each for a many children as possible living in conflict in the Middle East, especially children in Gaza.  The artists are donating 50 percent of any sales to the Charity, and some will even generously donate all the proceeds…!!

“There’s a special space allocated to paintings by children of war-torn Gaza an area in which Tuesday’s Child has worked hard to alleviate some of the terrible conditions suffered, especially by innocent Palestinian children.

“There’s literally something for everybody here, with works ranging from a piece of beautiful ceramic at £75 right up to a lovely painting by one of Ulster’s top artists which costs £5400!”

“Many of the artworks have a Christmas or nativity theme making it an extremely appropriate and interesting exhibition for this festive season. However, for me, the most important contributions are from children in Gaza, made possible by the kind co-operation of UNRWA and the Qattan Foundation. Art transcends all borders and it is wonderful that these paintings have travelled from Gaza to Belfast. The sheer talent and ability of these children is remarkable; may their light shine for all to see.’” said Orla.

Belfast Lord Mayor Cllr Pat Convery officially opened the exhibition and commented, ” I am sure the citizens of Belfast and the many visitors to our city at this time, will really enjoy exploring the wide range of styles and paintings and prints and sculpture on show here this week.”

I’m pleased to have chosen Tuesdays Child as one of my special Lord Mayor’s Charities for my year of office.

“What impressed me most was not just the great work they undertake in 12 different countries, many of them war torn like Gaza and Bosnia- Herzegovina… but especially the fact that every single penny which the public or business donates to Tuesdays Child goes directly to disadvantaged and underprivileged children.  All the administration costs are funded from outside of the charity”.

The Exhibition is taking place in the Belfast’s old Assembly Rooms in the Northern Bank building at number 2 Waring Street. It will be open from 10am until 8pm Mon- Friday and from 10am until 6pm on Saturday 18th, and Sunday from 10am until 2 p.m.

One Country Country Spotlight: Democratic Republic of Congo... The recent civil war in eastern DRC has devastated many aspects of life and children are among those most affected. A population size equivalent to that of Ireland, north and south, died either through direct conflict or displacement. Mulongo is a school catering for about 2000 children. The school is one of many decimated during the war. It needs rebuilt and basic school supplies and a playground facility with better salaries to retain underpaid teachers. The Active Christian Evangelism (ACE) Group, lead by Dr Graham Fry, is funding the project; more funds are needed. Other areas in needs are feeding programmes, health promotion programmes and support of a new maternity hospital. Find out more about the Countries we help...
